RALEIGH, NC — The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is encouraging volunteers across the state to participate in the 2026 Fall Litter Sweep, scheduled for September 12–26, to help clean up roadside debris ahead of the autumn foliage season.
The biannual initiative brings together community volunteers, civic groups, and local residents to remove trash along state-maintained highways.
“Even with NCDOT crews, contractors and Adopt-A-Highway volunteers working year-round to maintain more than 80,000 miles of roadway, litter remains a challenge,” said Jeremy Goodwin, NCDOT roadside environmental engineer. “We’re proud of the volunteers who step up each season to help bridge that gap. The Fall Litter Sweep is a great opportunity for folks across the state to get outdoors, work together and help preserve our state’s beauty one pickup at a time.”
How to Get Involved

Free Cleanup Supplies: NCDOT provides volunteers with free supplies, including trash bags, work gloves, and orange safety vests.

Supply Pickup: Materials can be requested directly through local NCDOT county maintenance yard offices.

Crew Support: NCDOT maintenance crews will dedicate time during the sweep to assist volunteers by collecting filled trash bags and removing heavy roadside debris.
Participants are encouraged to share their cleanup efforts on social media using the hashtag #LitterSweepNC.
