Residents across coastal North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina are being urged to prepare for potential flooding this weekend as a surge of tropical moisture threatens to dump severe rainfall across the region.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington issued a Flood Watch on Friday afternoon, warning that heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding from Saturday morning through Sunday morning.
Forecasters expect widespread rainfall totals between 2 and 4 inches, with localized amounts reaching up to 8 inches in areas hit hardest by training showers and thunderstorms.
The watch covers key coastal and inland communities across both states:
-
North Carolina: Coastal and Inland Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties, as well as Columbus County.
-
South Carolina: Coastal and Inland Georgetown counties, along with Coastal, Central, and Northern Horry counties.
Meteorologists caution that excessive runoff will likely cause swift rises in rivers, creeks, and streams, while threatening low-lying and flood-prone roads.
Emergency officials recommend that residents in affected areas monitor local forecasts, secure property, and avoid driving through flooded roads over the weekend.
