Novant Payroll Glitch Delays Direct Deposits for Employees

When you expect to get paid on Friday at a certain time, to pay bills, buy groceries…and that paycheck doesn’t post to your account, scheduled autodrafts still roll and it gets alot of feathers ruffled, as it should.

A payroll disruption tied to a recent vendor transition left some Novant Health employees waiting longer than expected for their regularly scheduled payday deposits Friday. The issue was traced to a technology problem affecting the timing of deposits reaching financial institutions, according to the health system.

While officials said payroll processing itself was completed, the delay occurred after funds were transmitted for deposit.

Novant Health reported that the problem was identified following the organization’s move to a new payroll distribution vendor in October. The payroll vendor, ADP, confirmed that employee payments were expected to arrive Friday.

For healthcare workers and support staff across the system, payday interruptions can create immediate concerns ranging from automatic bill drafts to potential banking fees. In response, Novant Health announced it will reimburse employees for overdraft fees, late-payment charges, and returned-payment fees directly linked to the delay.

The health system has also indicated it will provide guidance to affected workers on how to seek reimbursement and what resources may be available while the matter is resolved.

At this time, the organization has not publicly disclosed how many employees were impacted. Public statements have characterized the situation as a payroll distribution issue resulting from a technology problem associated with the vendor change. No public information released Friday suggested employee data had been compromised.

The incident comes as Novant Health continues to expand and operate facilities throughout North Carolina, including locations serving patients and employees in southeastern portions of the state.

In a statement addressing the delay, the health system apologized to team members and said efforts are underway to help prevent similar disruptions in future payroll cycles.
