WHITEVILLE, NC — A new fast‑charging electric vehicle station is set to be built in downtown Whiteville after the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced the 2nd round of awards under the National Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program.
NCDOT awarded $14.4 million to eight businesses statewide to install and operate charging stations along major travel corridors. Fourteen locations were selected in this round, including sites in Asheboro, Columbus, High Point, Kinston, Raleigh, Wadesboro and Weaverville. These will join five NEVI‑funded stations that began development in 2024.
The Whiteville project will be constructed and operated by PowerUp LLC at 314 Washington Street. Plans call for six DC fast‑charging ports capable of delivering up to 400 kilowatts of power. The company received $1,714,465 in federal reimbursement funding for the project.
State officials say the expansion is designed to keep pace with the rising number of electric vehicles registered in North Carolina and to support long‑distance travel across rural and urban regions.
“The number of electric vehicles registered in North Carolina continues to increase,” said Heather Hildebrandt, NCDOT’s State Initiatives Manager. “By expanding our electric vehicle charging network, we’re making it easier for everyone to travel confidently across the state, while supporting a cleaner, more modern transportation economy.”
North Carolina received $109 million through the federal NEVI program to partner with private businesses on charging infrastructure. The funding covers procurement, installation and operation costs. NCDOT expects the statewide charging network to be completed within three years, with a later phase focusing on additional rural and community‑level sites.
