WHITEVILLE, NC — Detention officers and Sheriff’s Office investigators uncovered narcotics and homemade weapons during multiple sweep incidents at local correction facilities over the weekend.
On Saturday, Sept. 26, around 11:01 a.m., Deputy Travis E. Tyson logged an incident at the Columbus County Detention Center located at 803 Washington Street. Authorities seized 4.35 grams of cocaine, 3.63 grams of methamphetamine, 7.32 grams of marijuana, and 20 cigarettes. A 29-year-old male inmate faces charges of possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver cocaine, conspiracy to sell/deliver marijuana, and conspiracy to sell methamphetamine.
The following morning, Sept. 27, at 9:05 a.m., Deputy Tyson conducted a search at the state prison facility at 1255 Prison Camp Road and confiscated a shank—described as a homemade weapon with a sharp tip and blue rubber handle—from a 45-year-old inmate.
On Monday, Sept. 28, Deputy Nathan Gilbert responded to a separate weapon discovery at the NC Department of Corrections facility on Prison Camp Road at 9:05 a.m., charging a 33-year-old prisoner with possession of a weapon by a prisoner.
All individuals named in this report are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
