Betty Brooks Carter, 86, our beloved mom, also known as Gram, Mamaw, Mema, and Granny, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026 leaving a legacy of love, hard work, and a smile that could brighten a whole room.
Betty loved her family and friends dearly, and she had a way of making people feel welcome and cared for. She was the strongest lady we knew. She and her husband shared 48 years of marriage, and they built a life centered on family. For nearly 30 of those years, they were devoted caregivers to their son. Through years of hard work and sacrifice, they also put three children through college at the same time. Betty always gave so much of herself to those she loved.
She was a Christian and a member of First Baptist Church in Whiteville, NC. She loved to bake, and anyone who tasted her lemon cake might tell you it had healing powers. Of course, Betty knew who the true Healer was, but a slice of her cake certainly brought comfort to many.
Later in life, Betty and her husband enjoyed traveling and camping in their RV. Wherever they went, her greatest joy remained the people she loved.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Gene Carter and sons Darryl Gene Carter and Darrin Glen Carter.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Dena Carter Mullins and husband, Tim, of Whiteville, NC, and DeLynda Carter Ward and husband, John, of Wilkesboro, NC; her brothers, Robert Clarence Brooks of Elkmont, AL, Jimmy Douglas Brooks (Terry) of Evans, GA, and Roy Marvin Brooks (Georgia) of Brighton, MI; her sister, Mary Catherine Wilford of Elkmont, AL; her seven grandchildren, Robert Mullins (Dora), Thomas Mullins, Mandy Cook (Kyle), Tyler Ward (Jessica), Parker Ward (Adrian), Copeland Ward Scales (Dante), and Glen Carter (Mackenna); and her thirteen great-grandchildren, Corbin, Kinley, Carson, Cali, Griffin, Lennon, Elias, Vaeda, Callan, Colson, Noah, Marshall, and Clementine.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 28 from noon until 2:00 pm at Peacock Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Jimmy McGlamery officiating. Interment will follow at Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org or Susan G. Komen at komen.org.
