Elizabeth Ann Averitt Callahan, age 78, of Lake Waccamaw, passed away at Columbus Regional Healthcare on Friday, October 23, 2026. Ann was born in Cumberland County on March 5, 1948, to the late Clarence Cranford Averitt and Veria Elizabeth Cashwell “Betsy” McLeod.
She worked as an Accounting Supervisor with GMAC Finance as well as a Call Center Supervisor for 25 years until her retirement. She loved reading, gardening, loving on her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as her fur babies. Ann married her high school sweetheart, Rusty.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 59 years, Neil Graham “Rusty” Callahan III, daughters; Susanne Griffin (Mike) of Fayetteville and Shannon Denys Callahan of Lake Waccamaw, sister; Carol Sue Creighton (Roy) of Raleigh, grandchildren; Michael D. Griffin II (Jessica), Scott Anthony Collins (Deidre), Zack Neil Poppell (Amber), Nicholas Alexander Griffin (Kaitlyn) and Tucker Andrew Poppell (Valerie), great grandchildren; Jace Collins, Hadley Griffin, Brennex Griffin, River Collins, Harlow Griffin, Rhya Griffin, neice; Michelle Kornegay (Bo) of Raleigh, and Fur Babies; Ginger, Sugar, and GiGi.
The family will be having a family celebration of life at a later date.
