Multiple Brunswick County fire departments responded Wednesday evening to a structure fire in the Shallotte area that sent heavy plumes of dark smoke visible for miles.
Emergency crews received dispatch calls around 6:30 p.m. reporting a fire at Ike’s Pit, located near the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Hale Swamp Road. The business sells lumber, mulch, and other materials.
First responders initially worked to clarify the nature of the emergency, determining that the blaze was a commercial structure fire rather than a recurrence of the wildfires that have previously impacted the surrounding area.
During the response, firefighters noted gas tanks exploding as the fire spread. Due to limited immediate water access at the location, fire engines established a continuous water shuttle operation, using a nearby Dollar General as the primary supply station to refill tank trucks.
Fire crews successfully brought the blaze under control. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been revealed, and the incident remains under investigation.
