Peanuts and cotton go in the ground as growers remain optimistic for the season ahead.
The South Carolina Department of Agriculture reports that farmers across the state are moving ahead with spring planting even as rainfall remains limited in several regions. Peanuts and cotton are now going into the ground, two crops that anchor much of the state’s agricultural economy.
Cotton production is concentrated across the Pee Dee and Midlands, with counties such as Darlington, Orangeburg, Calhoun, Lee, Williamsburg, Dillon, Florence, Horry, Marion, Marlboro, Sumter, Bamberg, Barnwell, Hampton, Aiken, Dorchester, and Colleton consistently reporting strong acreage.
Peanut production remains strongest along the Savannah River corridor and parts of the Midlands, including Allendale, Hampton, Barnwell, Sumter, Lee, Marion, Darlington, and Bamberg counties.
Agriculture officials say that while early‑season dryness can create challenges, growers are accustomed to adapting and remain optimistic. The agency extended well‑wishes to farmers statewide as the 2026 growing season gets underway.
