LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. — Emergency personnel are actively scouring Lake Waccamaw following reports of a missing kayaker late Sunday into Monday evening.

According to first responders, search crews are looking for a 25-year-old male who was last seen operating a black kayak. Emergency operations are focused along the water between Dale’s Seafood and the Sigmon Boat Ramp, with ground personnel also searching near the dam.

Multiple specialized units have been deployed to the area, including water rescue teams and aerial drone operators. Staging and command operations have been established at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission boat landing on Canal Cove Road.

Lake Waccamaw Fire Chief Chase Lancaster confirmed Monday evening that North Carolina State Parks is serving as the lead agency for the operation.

“We are asking everyone to stay off the lake while the search is underway,” Lancaster told reporters, emphasizing that clear waters are critical for response vessels and aerial search efforts.

In an effort to generate local leads, the Town of Lake Waccamaw issued a reverse 911 alert urging lakeside residents to inspect their private piers, docks, and surrounding shorelines for any sign of the missing man or his kayak. Recreational boaters are strongly advised to avoid the search zone entirely until further notice.

Details regarding what caused the kayaker’s disappearance have not yet been released.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as official information becomes available.
