OKI, NC — Oak Island Town Council has approved a business license for a new Utility Task Vehicle rental operation following a divided vote at its September 8th meeting. The decision allows High Tide Powersports, owned by Dustin Owens, to begin offering UTV rentals on the island, under a set of conditions intended to limit impacts on traffic, safety, and local services.
Council voted 3 – 2 to grant the license after reviewing the application under the town’s specialty category for motorized recreational riding devices. That category requires supplemental documentation and council-level approval. Members discussed concerns related to vehicle storage, renter age, and the potential for increased congestion on island roads before adopting the conditions.
Under the approval, the business must store its fleet off the island and is limited to five UTVs, all of which must be registered in Oak Island. Renters and drivers must be at least 25 years old. The business is also expected to make best efforts to use Oak Island gas stations and repair shops for routine service needs.
Council members noted that the conditions were intended to balance business activity with public safety considerations.
