Crews will test sanitary lines along East Leonard and East 8th Streets starting Wednesday; residents advised to prep home drains.
SOUTHPORT, NC — Brunswick County Public Utilities will perform routine smoke testing of the sanitary sewer collection system along East Leonard Street and East 8th Street in Southport beginning Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Testing operations are tentatively scheduled to run daily between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m, with field crews expecting to wrap up work by Friday, October 30, 2026.
Smoke testing is a standard, non-toxic diagnostic procedure used by utility crews to locate cracks, leaks, or improper connections within municipal sewer infrastructure. During the testing process, residents and property owners in the surrounding area may notice harmless white smoke emerging from ground surfaces, sewer manholes, building roof vents, or outdoor gutters.
County utility officials advise residents living in or near the work zone to run water into all household sinks, showers, and bathtub drains prior to Wednesday morning. Filling these fixture P-traps creates a water seal that prevents testing smoke from entering indoor living spaces through floor or sink drains.
Residents with questions or specific safety concerns regarding the upcoming smoke testing can reach the Brunswick County Utilities Department directly at (910) 253-2657. Further details and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the official county website at brunswickcountync.gov
