COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC — Columbus County Public Utilities has issued a precautionary Boil Water Advisory for customers in Water District II following a main water line break caused by contractors working in the area on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026.
Incident Details
-
Cause: Outside contractors struck and ruptured a main water line during ongoing work, causing a sudden drop in water pressure across the District II service area.
-
Impacted Area: All residential and commercial customers receiving municipal water service through Columbus County Water District II.
Precautionary Boil Water Instructions
Due to the risk of bacterial contamination from the pressure loss, water customers in District II are advised to boil all water used for human consumption until further notice:
-
Boiling Duration: Bring all water to a vigorous rolling boil for at least one (1) minute before allowing it to cool.
-
Intended Uses: Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation.
-
Alternative: Bottled water is strongly recommended for drinking and food preparation until laboratory testing confirms the safety of the water supply.
Status & Testing Process
Utility crews were dispatched to repair the line break and restore system pressure. Once pressure is restored, technicians will collect water samples across District II for bacteriological testing to ensure no harmful contaminants entered the system.
The advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms the water meets state and federal drinking standards, after which a formal rescind notice will be issued.
