Busy Halloween Keeps Nakina First Responders Swamped Across Columbus County

Nakina Fire & Rescue

NAKINA, NC — Emergency crews with Nakina Fire and Rescue in Columbus County stayed on the move throughout a busy Halloween afternoon, handling local medical calls, assisting a nearby agency, knocking down a woods fire, and coordinating a helicopter airlift for a severe injury.

The shift kicked off with Nakina EMS 29 heading over to support the Tabor City Boat Race, providing medical standby coverage after checking in with the Tabor City Emergency Services Chief. Back home, EMS 10 and Paramedic Quick Response Vehicle 21 stayed staged within the district, making sure regular 9-1-1 calls were answered without delay.

Not long after, firefighters raced to Electric Avenue near NC Highway 905 when a brush fire began spreading into nearby woods. Crews aboard Engine 10, Engine 29, Tanker 10, EMS 29, and QRV 21 surrounded the fire and extinguished it before it could cause further damage.

Later that afternoon, first responders rushed to Fox Estates Drive in the Lee’s Lake community after a hunter fell about 30 foot from a tree stand. EMS 29 and Paramedic QRV 21 treated the injured patient on the spot and took them to a landing site at Ramsey Ford Road and NC Highway 905. Engine 10 cleared and secured the area so an Air Reach medical helicopter could safely land and fly the patient to a trauma center.

Nakina Fire and Rescue expressed special thanks to the landowners who let emergency units use their property at Ramsey Ford Road and NC 905 as a helicopter landing site during critical calls. Department leaders also thanked Columbus County 911 dispatchers, neighboring crews, and all responding firefighters and paramedics for keeping the community safe through a challenging holiday shift.
