Riegelwood Man Sentenced to Up to 40 Months for Cocaine Offense Near School

George Devon Mcnair (CCSO)

WILMINGTON, NC — A Riegelwood man with a history of drug convictions will spend the next two to three years behind bars following a guilty plea in New Hanover County Superior Court.

George Devon McNair, 51, was sentenced by Superior Court Judge R. Kent Harrell to 23 to 40 months in state prison after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school.

The charges stem from a traffic stop conducted by Wilmington Police Department officers on McNair’s Chevrolet Tahoe along Market Street. Law enforcement officers had been monitoring the vehicle as it traveled back and forth throughout the day to the Howard Johnson Motel. Recognizing McNair from prior police encounters, officers knew he was operating the vehicle with a revoked driver’s license and had an active, outstanding arrest warrant.

During a search of the vehicle, officers seized $272 in cash and 6.89 grams of cocaine, which had been divided and packaged into 28 individual plastic bags for sale.

The enhanced charge was applied because the Howard Johnson Motel is located within 1,000 feet of Mosley Career Readiness Academy, a public high school on Princess Place Drive.

According to court records, McNair has prior felony drug convictions in North Carolina dating back to 2001, including possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver cocaine in 2001 and 2002, as well as a 2009 conviction for trafficking in cocaine.

Assistant District Attorney David Joyner prosecuted the case on behalf of the State.
