HORRY COUNTY, SC —The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is inviting families to cast a line and make memories during the annual Take a Kid Fishing Day, scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at several popular Horry County piers.
The free event encourages children ages 3 and up to experience the joy of fishing while learning about marine conservation and responsible angling. Each child may bring one adult to fish alongside them at no cost, and every registered participant will receive raffle tickets for prizes, including a South Carolina saltwater lifetime license awarded to one lucky state resident.
Families can choose from six coastal locations: Cherry Grove, Surfside, 2nd Avenue, Springmaid, Myrtle Beach State Park, and Garden City. Advance registration is required through Eventbrite.
Event Guidelines
-
Format: Catch-and-release tournament; participants are encouraged to bring their own rods and tackle, though a limited number of children’s loaner rods will be available at no charge.
-
Bait and Gear: Free bait will be provided on-site. Adults planning to fish must supply their own gear.
-
Weather: Held rain or shine unless hazardous conditions occur.
-
Logistics: Admission to the piers is free for registered families. Parking is available in the lots outside each pier, with check-in taking place directly on the structure.
