Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.

Washington, DC — Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on the United States took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday, applying new duties to roughly 700 American products and marking the country’s most expansive tariff response in recent years. The measures follow last month’s breakdown in trade negotiations between the two governments, a collapse that led the United States to impose a 50% tariff on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Canadian new tariff schedule is designed to match the scale of the US duties and protect Canadian industries affected by the dispute. The list includes a wide range of American products, from industrial materials to consumer goods. Items such as aluminum foil, railway locomotives, and cheese are now subject to the higher rates. Hundreds of other U.S. goods, including utensils, refrigerators, and cosmetics, will face Canadian tariffs of 15, 25, or 50% depending on category.
The most significant change affects steel and aluminum products imported from the United States. Canadian businesses that previously paid a 25% tariff on those materials will now pay 50 percent, a shift expected to influence construction, manufacturing, and transportation sectors that rely on cross‑border supply chains.
