RALEIGH — Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein joined N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler at the North Carolina State Fair grounds in Raleigh to celebrate and spotlight the state’s leading economic engine: agriculture.

During their walk-through of the fairgrounds, state leaders highlighted the vital role that farm families, local producers, and skilled tradespeople play across North Carolina’s 100 counties.

“North Carolina’s agriculture industry is the backbone of our economy, and the State Fair is where agriculture gets to put on a show,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Whether you’re here for the food, views, rides, or prizes, there is something for everyone at the North Carolina State Fair.”

Fair Food, Heritage, and Skilled Trades

The official visit featured stops across the fairgrounds showcasing North Carolina’s diverse culture and economic traditions:

  • Fair Cuisine: Governor Stein and First Lady Stein sampled local culinary creations, including fried lamb chops, classic corn dogs, and visited the fair’s new Midway Events Center food hall.

  • Heritage Circle: The gubernatorial party visited Heritage Circle to spotlight North Carolina’s deep history in the viticulture and wine industry.

  • Skilled Trades Competition: State leaders attended the “Apprenticeship: Plumbing & HVAC-R” competition to cheer on young apprentices competing in essential vocational trades.

“The State Fair is a celebration of our state’s agricultural heritage and its important role in North Carolina’s economy,” said First Lady Anna Stein. “It’s a chance for people to meet the farmers, producers, and artisans behind it all, discover their new favorite food, or find a community they should visit and explore.”

The Economic Impact of Tar Heel Agriculture

North Carolina agriculture remains the state’s No. 1 industry, generating an economic impact of more than $117 billion annually. The sector directly employs 21% of the state’s workforce, representing 1 in every 5 jobs in North Carolina.

North Carolina leads the nation in several key agricultural commodities:

  • #1 Nationally: Flue-cured tobacco and sweet potatoes.

  • Top 3 Nationally: Christmas trees, turkeys, trout, cucumbers, hogs, and peanuts.

“We want consumers to understand that our state’s agriculture industry produces the food that we enjoy every day,” added Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Agriculture has been the foundation of the State Fair from its beginnings, and I am proud that it remains at the heart of the Fair.”
