Descendants say cleanup efforts have helped preserve the historic family burial ground.
CAROLINA SHORES, NC — A historic Beck family cemetery on the property of the new Walmart development in Carolina Shores has been restored – after descendants raised concerns about the condition of the burial ground.
Family members reported overturned headstones and other disturbances they believed were connected to nearby construction activity. The concerns were brought forward with support from the Broken Headstones Project, a group focused on cemetery preservation.
The Beck family cemetery is one of several historic family burial grounds in southern Brunswick County, reflecting generations of local history and settlement. Historical records document Beck and Bennett-Beck family cemeteries in the Carolina Shores, Calabash and Thomasboro communities.
The restoration included more than cleanup efforts. Beck family descendants, preservation advocates and community volunteers worked together to protect the historic burial ground by preserving headstones, installing permanent black metal fencing and adding cemetery identification markers. The improvements were designed to provide long-term protection and recognition for the family cemetery following concerns raised during Walmart development activity.
