LAKE WACCAMAW — The multi-agency search for a missing kayaker came to a tragic end Tuesday morning after emergency crews recovered the body of a 25-year-old South Carolina man in Lake Waccamaw.
Authorities identified the victim as Erick Ross, 25, of South Carolina.
First responders were initially dispatched to the area around 4:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, after an abandoned kayak was discovered near one of the public boat ramps at Lake Waccamaw. Rescuers located Ross’s cell phone and other personal belongings inside the unattended vessel.
Personnel with Lake Waccamaw State Park, Town of Lake Waccamaw public safety officials, and regional emergency management teams immediately launched a comprehensive search-and-rescue mission. Crews searched through the night before pausing operations at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday. Search efforts resumed at 7 a.m.
At around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, search teams recovered Ross’s body from the water.
Approximately 25 local and state agencies assisted in the extensive search effort. Responding units included personnel from Columbus, Brunswick, Nash, New Hanover, and Union counties, alongside North Carolina State Parks, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
“On behalf of the Town of Lake Waccamaw, we extend our deepest sympathies to Erick’s family and loved ones during this difficult and tragic time,” Emergency Management Director Chase Lancaster said. “We want to thank North Carolina State Parks, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, and all of the other responding agencies for their dedication, response and assistance throughout the search.”
Lake Waccamaw Mayor Greg Jacobs also offered condolences on behalf of the municipality.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult and tragic time,” Mayor Jacobs said. “We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this heartbreaking situation.”
Town officials confirmed that no additional details regarding the incident are available at this time.
