COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC — Whiteville’s City Council has approved a 12‑month moratorium on new data‑center and cryptocurrency‑mining operations, voting during its August 25, 2026 meeting to temporarily halt proposals while the city reviews zoning definitions and infrastructure capacity.
Council members said the pause will give staff time to evaluate how high‑demand digital‑processing facilities could affect electrical systems, water usage, cooling requirements, and nearby residential areas. The city noted that the moratorium, a planning measure to ensure standards are in place before any applications are submitted.
Columbus County commissioners are preparing to consider a similar action.
A proposed 90‑day moratorium on data‑center and digital‑processing facilities is scheduled for discussion during the Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, September 21, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at 127 West Webster Street in Whiteville.
Commissioners are expected to review whether existing ordinances and infrastructure guidelines are sufficient before determining whether a temporary pause is needed. Any formal action would occur during or after the meeting, depending on the board’s deliberation.
Both actions reflect a broader trend among local governments evaluating how emerging digital‑infrastructure projects may shape long‑term land use, service demands, and community compatibility.
