SUNSET HARBOR, NC — Members of the Sunset Harbor-Zion Hill Volunteer Fire Department recently took part in intensive hands-on training aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness during the first moments of a fire response.

The First Due Operator course focused on helping engineers and apparatus operators do more than simply manage pumping operations. Participants were challenged to take on additional fireground responsibilities while ensuring water delivery remained uninterrupted.

Throughout the training, firefighters practiced deploying attack lines, securing their own water supply, and raising ground ladders after establishing water flow to the initial handline. The exercises were designed to simulate real-world situations where departments must accomplish multiple tasks with limited personnel.

Department members also strengthened their understanding of apparatus capabilities, water flow calculations, and time management strategies. Officials said the course helped build confidence and reinforced the importance of adaptability when operating in staffing-limited environments.

By investing in advanced training opportunities, local firefighters continue working to enhance their readiness and improve service to the communities they protect.
