Gas Station Hot‑Food Review: Royal Farms – Shallotte NC (8.5 out of 10 Stars)
SHALLOTTE, NC — On a quick weekend errand, we decided to stop in and check out the newly opened Royal Farms in Shallotte. The visit wasn’t for fuel – gas prices were running a bit high – but curiosity about the hot‑food setup was enough to pull us inside.
The store presents a modern layout with three large touchscreen kiosks displaying the hot‑food menu. The drink area includes self serve fountain drinks, coffee, shakes, frozen beverages, and a small seating section offers a few tables for anyone choosing to eat on site. During our visit, there was a steady flow of customers. Not crowded, but consistently busy enough to show the location is already drawing regular traffic.
Ordering is straightforward: make selections on the kiosk, take the printed slip to the cashier, pay, and wait for the food to be prepared. For this visit, we spent just under $30 to get a feel for what Royal Farms offers.
Our order included one bacon burger slider, a 7‑inch BLT sub served in three smaller buns, a family‑size order of breaded western fries potato wedges, a family‑size coleslaw, and a warm apple‑pie slice added on a whim. Staff handed everything over in a white plastic bag with a friendly sendoff.
A very petty observation that has nothing to do with the service or the food: the words “Royal Farms” isn’t printed in large type on the receipt. The name only appears in small lettering at the very bottom. (see told ya it was petty)
We took the food home and unpacked everything for a closer look.
The bacon burger slider was exactly what the name promised. I had forgotten I ordered a slider and not a full‑size hamburger, so the size caught me off guard at first. Once that realization passed, the taste held up well, with a simple mix of burger, bacon, and a touch of ketchup.
The BLT sub was my husband’s pick, and it wasn’t premade. The ingredients were fresh, with crisp lettuce and bright tomato. The three‑bun presentation was unusual, but the freshness carried the sandwich.
The family‑size breaded western fries potato wedges were thick and lightly breaded, and one of the standout items in the order. Good seasoning and a solid taste made them easy to enjoy.
The family‑size coleslaw was less successful for me. The vinegar was strong, and the larger chunks made the texture less appealing, especially in a portion meant to feed more than one person. However, my husband loved the coleslaw, so we were split on the rating.
The apple‑pie delivered exactly what a quick‑serve dessert should: sweet, warm, and familiar.
Overall, Royal Farms in Shallotte offered a better‑than‑expected gas station hot‑food experience. While the coleslaw missed the mark, the rest of the meal was easy, quick, and enjoyable for the price. Our final rating landed at 8.5 out of 10.
And will we return for more hot food? Yes. We still haven’t tried their signature fried chicken, and that alone earns them another visit.
