WHITEVILLE — A Whiteville woman was arrested Thursday after her one‑year‑old child reportedly ingested Subutex, a prescription medication used to treat opioid dependence. Deputies responded to 41 Oleander Drive around 5:13 p.m. on August 27 after receiving a call that a child had swallowed the drug. According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, the child was transported to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
Andrea Jane Millender, 20, was taken into custody and charged with exposing a child to a controlled substance resulting in ingestion. She was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.
Investigators said the case remains under review to determine how the child obtained the medication. No additional charges had been filed as of press time.
